Air purifier filter basics
Genuine or compatible?
Air-purifier filters are usually a combined HEPA-and-carbon cartridge, sometimes with a separate washable pre-filter. The maker's own filter is matched to the purifier's fan and sensor; a compatible filter that fits the housing can leak around the edges if it is a few millimetres out, so a genuine filter is worth the difference here unless the compatible one is made for the exact model.
Where the model number is
The type number is on the rating label on the bottom or the back of the purifier (Philips AC1215/70, Winix AUS-1250, Blueair 411i Max, Breville LAP308). The model name on the front is often shared by several type numbers, so use the label.
Why change it on time
A HEPA filter keeps catching particles as it loads, but the fan has to work harder and the carbon layer stops absorbing smells and gases well before the filter looks dirty. Makers quote six to twelve months; a filter light or app reminder counts hours, not dirt, so a smoky summer means changing sooner.
