Fridge water filter basics
Genuine or compatible?
Genuine means the fridge maker's own filter (Samsung, LG, Fisher & Paykel and the rest sell theirs through parts shops and retailers). Compatible filters are made by other companies to the same shape and flow rate, and the better ones carry NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 certification for what they remove. Both fit; the certification, not the brand on the box, is what tells you the water is filtered to the same standard. Every part page here shows the certifications we could confirm.
Where the model number is
The model number is on a sticker inside the fridge: usually on the left wall near the top, on the ceiling, or just inside the door. Samsung's starts with SRF, SRS or RF; LG's with GF, GS or GB; Fisher & Paykel's with RF or E; Westinghouse's with WHE, WQE or WSE. Type it on the home page, or photograph the sticker and we read it.
Why change it on time
Fridge filters are rated for about six months or a few hundred litres. Past that the carbon is saturated, flow slows, and the reduction in chlorine, lead and cysts drops off. Most fridges show a filter light on a timer, not a sensor, so the light is a reminder rather than a measurement; changing when it comes on is the right call.
