Vacuum cleaner filter basics
Genuine or compatible?
Stick vacuums take a washable pre-motor filter and often a post-motor HEPA filter; barrel vacuums take dust bags and an exhaust filter. Dyson, Shark, Samsung, Miele and Electrolux all sell genuine parts direct in Australia. Compatible bags and filters are widespread; a bag that does not seal to the inlet lets fine dust into the motor, so check the part is made for your model, not just your brand.
Where the model number is
Dyson prints the type (SV14, SV15) on the label behind the bin or on the body; Shark's model is on the label under the dust cup; Miele and Electrolux barrels have the model on the underside. The bag type (GN, FJM, s-bag) is printed on the old bag.
Why change it on time
Washable filters should be rinsed monthly and replaced when they stay grey after washing. A blocked filter is the usual cause of a cordless vacuum losing suction or cutting out. Bags should be changed when the indicator shows, not when they are stuffed full, because suction falls off well before that.
