The Philips AquaClean CA6903/10 is the ion-exchange cartridge for Philips and Saeco automatics with AquaClean. The machine counts cups and shows an orange filter icon when a change is due. Philips rates it for up to 625 cups per filter and up to 5,000 cups without descaling if you replace it eight times on request. After eight filters the machine will still ask you to descale.

How long it lasts
Follow the manufacturer's interval for your model.
After fitting: Fit the filter, then activate it in the machine menu (on button-panel models hold the AquaClean button about 3 seconds, then press start; the AquaClean light turns blue when active). Activation resets the cup counter and suppresses the descale alarm until the eighth filter.
Flow slows and taste drops off as the filter fills up. Changing on time is the whole point of the filter.

- 2Hold it upside down in a jug of cold water until air bubbles stop rising.
- 3Push the filter down firmly onto its connection in the water tank and fill the tank to MAX.
- 4Follow the on-screen AquaClean activation — the machine rinses for a minute or two and starts counting the filter's life.
